No contemporary world-class filmmaker has come close to finding the perfect cinematic definition of beauty like Paolo Sorrentino. For the first time, the creator of The Great Splendour puts the female heroine, the enchanting Parthenope, at the centre of the action, whose fate he recounts in chapters spread over several decades. But the same name has also been given to the unmistakable city of Naples in the past, whose appeal can be fatal, as it is for the melancholy beauty. With his stylishly honed, irresistible cinematic allure, Sorrentino returned to competition at Cannes for the seventh time.
