Old Karlovy Vary as you don't know it

On the site of today's National House (formerly named Grandhotel Schützenhaus, i.e. the Shooting Range), a building built by district engineer Wenzel Stöhr stood from 1819. After his death in 1836, the Carlsbad Rifle Corps bought the building and gradually adapted it into a shooting range and a restaurant with a social hall. The pictures from around 1890, which we scanned from [...]

Best friend at the spa - a newspaper and a good book!

The spa involves long moments that need to be shortened - by reading newspapers and books, writing letters and postcards, or even painting. Dobroslav Krejza and his shop on the ground floor of the Military Spa Institute, which proudly bore the name "The First Czech Bookstore-Paper Shop", offered a solution to all this. Krejza (pictured on the right) came to Karlovy Vary as a twenty-year-old young man in 1894 [...]

Cableway to the Friendship Height

Spring attracts visitors to nature and in Karlovy Vary to the spa forests, for example to the Diana lookout tower on the Friendship Height. Many trippers head here also because since 1912 an elegant and comfortable cableway has been leading to the top. In our Stanislav Burachovič Collection we keep two rare photographs from its construction. The first, dated 15 May 1912, [...]

Spa orchestra in a photo from 1865

Twenty-nine men bring musical instruments and a couple of chairs from the brewery restaurant. It's early autumn in 1865 and the twenty-nine men make up the Carlsbad Spa Orchestra. They want to take a photo to commemorate their 30th anniversary. Without knowing it, they have chosen a symbolic place for the picture. They are standing at the [...]

The Golden Era of the Crown

Today we would like to show you a rare photo album from the collection of Stanislav Burachovich, which shows the Krondorf (Korunní) acid mine around 1902. This was the most famous era of this village near Stráž nad Ohří, when its fate was firmly linked to the founder and owner of the mineral water bottling and distribution company Carl Gölsdorf. He originally came to Krondorf as the director of a [...]

Abstinents from Nejdek

The first of February marks the start of a traditional event during which many people voluntarily pledge not to drink alcohol - at least 28 days a year (29 this year). Not just a "dry February", but a whole "dry year" would not be a problem for a group of enthusiasts from Nejdek. However, we mean the pre-war Nejdek, we have no news about the current situation. In the collection of Stanislav Burachovich we came across a legitmation of the Nejdek [...]

Communist-capitalist casino in Císařské lázně

The landmark year of 1989 was much more blurred in Karlovy Vary than elsewhere in the country. Long before the revolution, communism shook hands with capitalism here. One such case was the casino in Císařské lázně, which opened in June 1988. The Communist Party-run country in the late 1980s was in desperate need of Western marks, shillings and dollars. Lubomír Štrougal's cabinet therefore made contacts [...]

Karlovy Vary brewery

In the collection of Stanislav Burachovič we often come across charming prints. One of them is a view of the Karlovy Vary bourgeois brewery, which stood on the site of today's Imperial Spa since 1732. Even though the picture is idyllic and the summer beer garden is a real lure to sit in, the brewery was a thorn in the side of many Karlovy Vary townspeople. The tall smoking chimney right in the spa centre suggests why. Originally [...]

How much did a bath in the Imperial Spa cost

Since September 2023 we have been looking after the extensive archive collection of Stanislav Burachovich, which was entrusted to us free of charge by his family. We have started organizing, inventorying and preparing it for access to researchers and the public. It will take some time, but already now we want to share the selected treasures and inspirations. The first topic will be prosaic. It will be about money. The Imperial Spas attracted [...]
