Ptáče / Bird
Andrea Arnold has topped the charts of contemporary European women filmmakers for almost two decades. This is not due to her initials, but to unforgettable films like Fish Tank and American Honey. This year, after eight years, she returned to the French Riviera to present her latest film Bird in the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival. An unusual coming-of-age story set in North Kent, it captures the gritty poetry of the street, softened by gentle touches of magical realism. A swaggering soundtrack, led by the unusual use of the song Yellow by British band Coldplay, and brilliant performances by Franz Rogowski and Barry Keoghan elevate it to a state of infectious euphoria with the same ease with which birds take to the skies.
