“I like variations — in music, in art, in film,” Jim Jarmusch remarked a few weeks ago at the Venice Film Festival, from which he took home the top prize. The latest work by the contemplative icon of American independent cinema offers refined variations on the theme of family relationships, presented as a triptych whose chapters unfold in the northeastern United States, Dublin, and Paris. Tom Waits, Adam Driver, Vicky Krieps, and Cate Blanchett, among others, quietly excel in a trio of gently humorous episodes that move with brilliance between warmth and awkwardness, between what is said and left unsaid, between empathy and emotional distance.
